Over the years, many crash damaged F-106s were shipped (usually by railroad) back to McClellan AFB for repair. Below are a few examples.
In this example, F-106A S/N 57-2482 had a landing accident on 29 May 74 and was repaired to fly again until it was shot down as a QF-106 drone S/N AD191 with an AIM - 7M on 20 Aug 96 at Tyndall AFB. This was the 86th F-106 produced and was delivered to the USAF in July 59.
This aircraft, F-106A S/N 58-0787, was repaired by Sacramento beginning in March 1970 and was next assigned to the 84th FIS, Hamilton AFB, CA on 05 Jan 72. On 30 May 73, it was then assigned to the 49th FIS, Griffiss AFB, NY until its retirement to the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH on 15 Aug 86. This minor incident occurred in about Dec 60 at McClellan when a GD/Convair field team was installing qualified cold-weather fuel valves. This happened during the refueling check-out phase when someone forgot to manually turn off a valve in the main wheel well on this early configured aircraft. The result was that the fuel wasn't distributed properly and it caused a center of gravity situation where there was more weight behind the main landing gear than there was weight forward of the main landing gear.
This series is a "Two-for-One" that made one good one out of two bad ones, on the scene by Sacramento ALC. When Pat first started his "There I Was" series, Wayne Neet submitted the first story about these two aircraft, 59-0054 and 59-0083. After much research, we found Joe Sylvia, who set the record straight on how all this got resolved.
Aircraft 59-0083 also finished its career with the 49th FIS only to be converted to a drone and shot down on its sixth drone flight by a AIM-120 at Tyndall AFB on 18 May 93.

QF-106A 59-0054 (second in back) as a drone.
Aircraft 59-0054 finished its career with the 318th FIS, McChord AFB WA only to be converted to a drone and was shot down on its fifth drone flight by an AIM-120 at Tyndall AFB on 14 Feb 96.
This series is another example of a crash damage aircraft being shipped off to Sacramento ALC for repair. Thanks Marv, great story and thanks for the feedback.
